Shopify cold start: a checklist to your first sale
Most new stores fail before ads even matter — the basics are broken. Fix these twelve things first, then spend on traffic.
Trust (the silent killer)
- 1. A real brand. Logo, consistent colors, a name that reads as a business, not a random store.
- 2. Policy pages. Shipping, returns, privacy, contact. Missing pages kill conversions.
- 3. A visible contact method. Email and ideally a chat widget.
- 4. Reviews or social proof. Even a handful of reviews changes everything.
Product page
- 5. A benefit-led title — not the raw supplier name.
- 6. A scannable description. Short paragraphs, bold benefit lines. People don't read walls of text.
- 7. Multiple images — lifestyle, in-use, close-up, size.
- 8. Clear pricing and shipping expectations. Surprise shipping costs are the number-one cart killer.
Store structure
- 9. A clear home page. One message, one hero, one obvious next step.
- 10. Fewer products. A focused store converts better than a scattered one.
- 11. A working checkout. Test it yourself end to end with a real card before you send traffic.
Before you spend on ads
- 12. One channel, one message. Pick a single audience and speak only to them. Broad campaigns burn budget with no data.
Traffic doesn't fix a broken store — it just shows more people that it's broken.
The fastest path
Get a real product, write a benefit-led page, add proof, test checkout, then run one small campaign to one audience. Read the data, fix the worst thing, repeat. That loop — not a clever hack — is what produces a first sale.
